Artist Statement
I view my process of making as a collaboration with the environment. I employ storytelling as a method of identifying and sharing the similarities and differences between people and the “more-than-human” world. In my work, the “more-than-human world” means viewing plants, microbes, water, trees, etc. as beings with their own form of intelligence and way of navigating the world. I encourage viewers to linger, engage in possibility and reflect on how we can be better partners with the land and wildlife to ensure mutual flourishing.
Hello hello!
I’m
Alexis, but I go by Lexie, and my pronouns are she/her. Designer, illustrator, and educator encompass the multiple facets of my creativity. Born and raised in Aberdeen, SD,
I have a strong tie to place, and am interested in the intersection of environment, place and identity. My interdisciplinary practice explores combining digital and analog art techniques.

Together, these interests and skills represent the education and experiences I have pursued and acquired in order to forge a career that supports every aspect of the art-making process. I am dedicated to networking with artists, fostering opportunities for art education, and cultivating community engagement with arts and culture.
This strong stance stems from the opportunities I was granted growing up in Northeast South Dakota and their ongoing influence on my life. The participation in and facilitation of community art programs throughout my life has instilled a strong tie to place. How can my immediate community further support local arts and also engage in larger, global art conversations is the main question behind my approach and mindset.
I am currently a graduate student at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA. I am pursuing an MFA in Graphic Design, with painting as a secondary emphasis. I am a Teaching Assistant at the University of Iowa, teaching the Elements of Design course.
I earned a M.A. in Critical & Curatorial Studies at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky with the completion of a masters thesis titled: Exploring Place As a Producer of Localized Art Styles and Its Role in a Contemporary Global Art World. My ongoing interest in how the social, economic and physical structures of a place influence the art-making process and produce local art styles served as the catalyst for my thesis research (bring up this topic at your own risk, I can talk about it for hours!).
At Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota, I earned a Bachelors of Art, In Honoribus, double majored in Graphic Design and Public Relations. In addition, I earned an Arts Administration Certificate and a Public History Certificate.
Thank you for perusing my work! If you have any questions or comments, please contact me using the form on my "Contact" page. I look forward to hearing from you!
Ending with a fun fact: my last name is pronounced 'door.'
